Kirk in the Hills Church (Bloomfield Hills, MI) is of Gothic design and patterned after the famous Melrose Abbey in Scotland that was built in the 13th Century.

A WAYFINDING CHALLENGE: NOT ENOUGH DIRECTIONAL SIGNS

Discussions with team members from Kirk in the Hills identified several challenges affecting the guest experience. One of these challenges was the lack of interior directional signage. Recent changes to how space was being utilized further complicated navigation and was the impetus for the project.

A WAYFINDING CHALLENGE: UNMARKED ROOMS AND AREAS

Another challenge to a comfortable guest experience was unmarked rooms and common areas. To make matters worse, many of these destinations had taken on different names over the history of the church – the same room was often referred to differently by different people.

This challenge was addressed by defining clear names for each room and area, identifying the area with a sign and referring to it consistently in directional signs and floor maps.

A WAYFINDING CHALLENGE: YEARS OF SPACE EVOLUTION

The third challenge to a comfortable guest experience was some navigational confusion resulting from multiple architectural expansions over time. For example, the Abbey was built and connected to the older Kirk House structure. To get to level 2 of the Kirk House, one has to ascend stairs from level 2 of the Abbey. This was confusing to guests and was addressed with clear strategically placed signage.

LETTING ARCHITECTURE LEAD

When performing our initial Experience Audit of the interior, the Ideation design team made several observations that would influence the final design of the wayfinding signage. One of these was the significant role architecture was already playing in shaping the guest experience.

There were several areas such as the entrance to the original chapel and the Tower of the Apostles that needed to be treated very respectfully. The architecture—comprised of marble, stone, leaded glass and stained glass—shaped the experience. While signage was needed, it must not detract from the existing architectural beauty.

BALANCING THE OLD AND NEW

The Ideation design team also recognized that there was clearly both an “old” and “newer” look inside the church. While much of the interior had the original 13th Century gothic style, more recently added spaces had a more modern feel. Our wayfinding sign designs would need to traverse both of these styles gracefully.

We accomplished this by defining a collection of materials, colors, and finishes that would work well in both the traditional and newer spaces. From these materials, we designed 22 different sign types. We then created a simpler variation of the sign types for the older or more traditional spaces. Typography was used consistently across both old and new spaces.

New Abbey lounge invites guests and members to live, love and linger. Photos © 2017 Gene Meadows.

DESIGN FOR APPROACHABILITY

The recently updated spaces, such as the new Abbey lounge, were designed to create a more informal and communal environment. While the new signage throughout the church needed to respect its surrounding architecture, reduced formality was also a goal.

In the spirit of this, lower case lettering was used in all signs except when referring to “Kirk in the Hills.” The message, Live, Love, Linger was added using dimensional letters in the Abbey lounge.

SUMMARY

The final solution was comprised of 200 unique signs produced from 22 different sign types. According to lead designer, Michael Garavaglia, “It was thrilling to work with such a significant architectural landmark in the community. Our goal was to come up with a solution that respected both the architectural heritage of the church and the forward momentum of the community inside it. It required a measured approach that was both systematic and flexible.”

Whether you need to revamp an existing business or want to establish a new one, business signage says a lot about your company. Signs identify where you are, communicate who you are, and help people comfortably navigate your business. Most people focus on the exterior sign and forget about wayfinding signs, reception signs, and even ADA compliant bathroom signs. To give you an idea of the possibilities, here are some business signage ideas that our clients have used.

Outdoor Signs to Maximize Impact

In it’s simplest function, outdoor signs tell people where you are. What’s the best form of outdoor sign? Well that depends on sight lines, viewing distances, surrounding visual noise, and city sign ordinances.

Cacao Tree, a local cafe, was presented with a problem. Because of the way their building was situated, only a small amount of their storefront faced the street. This made it difficult for people to find them. They came to us for business signage ideas and one solution we recommended was the projecting blade sign. By placing the blade signs at the corner of the buildings, we were able to draw the eyes of hungry pedestrians. To further distinguish them from the surrounding buildings, we used façade lettering and window graphics.

Reception Signs

First impressions mean a lot. A reception sign sets the tone for your client’s visit and can influence their perception of your services.

The team at DeClaire LaMacchia Orthopaedic Institute was looking for custom signage to bring their brand to their space while respecting the interior design. Working with their branding agency, we integrated their logo as a reception sign using a variety of metal finishes that complemented their interior design while creating a stunning first impression.

Wayfinding Signs

Large public buildings, like hospitals, apartment buildings, and hotels need wayfinding signs to direct people to their destinations. If your company moves large groups of people around your facility, then you need to make sure that the appropriate signage is in place. Many of those signs have ADA compliance requirements.

Outfield Lofts, in Lansing MI, needed both a wayfinding sign system and ADA compliant signs for their loft-style apartment building. The solution we delivered also contributed to their overall design rather than just meeting the functional requirements.

“Beyond the traditional value of making sure people know where to go when visiting and being an ADA compliant solution, our design added value to the environment by serving as an artistic element. Our goal was that the custom signage and environment would make residents proud to live there and visitors want to live there.” Jon Moses, Ideation

Digital Displays and Other Specialty Signs

There are times when businesses are faced with unique situations that can be fixed with business signs. For instance, Logicalis used a large amount of glass for interior walls. They did not want to block the open feel of their space, but they did desire a bit of privacy for their meeting rooms. Special graphics helped break up the large glass walls without blocking the light. They also preserved the feeling of openness.

In addition, they had a need for signage that told the story of their business. Integrating interactive digital displays, Ideation was able to bring their story to their space using a combination of static and dynamic digital content. Since Logicalis is a technology company, the use of the digital displays was a perfect fit.

More Business Signage Ideas

Regulations passed in 1990 with the Americans with Disabilities Act require all businesses to have ADA compliant Wayfinding signs. According to the ADA, all organizations open to the public must provide equal access to the disabled. This regulation includes businesses such as restaurants, stores, and theaters as well as public access buildings, like libraries.

Installing ADA compliant wayfinding signs is necessary for a business to get their Certificate of Occupancy. Many companies don’t think about ADA signs until faced with a violation, yet they should. ADA compliant signs allow businesses to serve all clients regardless of ability. This accommodation is noble and serves the greater good.

What does it mean to have ADA Compliant Signs?

ADA compliance involves several factors.

The height and placement of the wayfinding sign.

Use of Braille or tactile letters.

Easy to read colors and fonts.

Do All Signs Need to be ADA Compliant?

Not all business signs must comply with ADA regulations. Exterior signs remain exempt, as well as pylon signs. The types of signage that require compliance are mostly interior signs.

Bathroom Signs

Room Identification Signs

Wayfinding Signs

Acceptable Design for ADA Compliant Wayfinding Signs

According to the guide on the ADA website, wayfinding signs should meet the following regulations.

Signs should be high-contrast – light on dark, or dark on light.

Large fonts without decoration to make them easier to read.

All Braille and tactile lettering must follow guidelines regarding character size and spacing.

Bathroom signs and Entrance signs must be placed next to the door.

International Symbol of Access Signs cannot deviate from the official symbol. This rule would include signs such as the one put on accessible parking spaces.

However, just because a sign must meet these requirements does not mean that it can’t have artistic elements.

“Beyond the traditional value of making sure people know where to go when visiting and being an ADA compliant solution, our design added value to the environment by serving as an artistic element. Our goal was that the custom signage and environment would make residents proud to live there and visitors want to live there.” Jon Moses, Ideation.

What To Do When You Need ADA Compliant Wayfinding Signs

If you find all the ADA compliance regulations a bit confusing, don’t worry. A professional sign company, like Ideation Signs, understands the rules and can help you order what you need.

Not only can they create your ADA compliant wayfinding signs but they can install them. You won’t have to worry about installation regulations either. Keep in mind that with compliance you are making your space more accessible, increasing the likelihood of visitors.

ADA Wayfinding Project by Ideation

Gillespie Group, a developer of creative apartment communities and commercial spaces contacted us to design, produce and install custom ADA wayfinding signage that would work with commissioned graffiti art pieces and ultimately live up to the brand identity of their new Midtown apartment development in Lansing, Michigan.

Large floor numbers made a statement while tying in with the floor-specific color palette and custom graffiti artwork.

When we were brought in by the team at Gillespie Group, the target audience and brand identity for the property was already defined on paper. The architecture and interior design including color palette and finishes were already specified. Our goal was to come up with a wayfinding signage design that would work with these elements and contribute to the brand. Of course, we also needed to meet the budget and the required deadline.

Our ADA Wayfinding Signage work included 5 key steps:

Sign Strategy: Survey and planning to determine the 132 signs from 16 unique types that would be needed in the space along with code and ADA compliance requirements. This also included a placement map of where signs would go.

Conceptualization: Develop design concepts for each of the 16 unique types of signs

Detailed Design: Design each unique sign to exact production specification

Production: Fabricate all signs to design specification

Installation: Install signs in sync with buildout phases

Directional wall signs greeted guests exiting the elevator on each floor.

We designed the room identifications signs so they would meet ADA compliance regulations with tactile characters and grade 2 braille.

Code compliant stairway identification signs were designed with a floor-specific color palette that made both the client and the building inspector happy.

The sign system continued into the parking garage with a consistent design but unique materials to withstand the temperature drop.

Our sign strategy included placement maps that worked to validate the need and placement of each sign with the client team, leading the way to a smooth installation.

In 2014, the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) was in a dire position. As the city of Detroit was undergoing federal bankruptcy plans, the museum was in danger of losing their art collection. Fortunately, thanks to the generous donations from private donors, corporations, and foundations, the museum’s treasures were protected from creditors; through what became known as the “Grand Bargain.” The DIA engaged Ideation to create an artistic donor wall to recognize the donors that contributed an astonishing $100 million to the unprecedented “Grand Bargain.”

According to Ideation project leader, Michael Garavaglia “While recognizing these generous donors was of utmost importance, we all wanted to produce a work of art that would draw viewers in to understand and appreciate the story – how donors came to the rescue of art under a very creative arrangement.”

It began with a concept developed by DIA designers, Everett Keyser and Serene Arena. The concentric circles in the concept circles represented the ripple effect of the Grand Bargain that will be felt in the community for years to come. Ideation’s role was to help bring this concept to life-solving questions related to colors, materials, finishes, dimension, fabrication techniques, sizing and ultimately, the installation.

Donor name tiles floating above their respective rings formed by their own name in a raised overlapping pattern.

As the DIA was scheduling a special event to unveil the installation and recognize the key donors, Ideation’s creation of a master plan to timely usher the team through the steps of concept refinement, prototyping, engineering, production, and installation in 4 months was critical for an on-time completion.

Prototyping of key elements was a high-value step to make everyone involved comfortable with the fit, finish and overall effect. Donor names appeared to float right off the wall by using hidden stud-mount attachments with a stand-off. The bottom layer of textured “ring panels” had pre-aligned placement holes to serve as a precise placement pattern when installing the top layer of donor panels.

Photo © 2017 Gene Meadows.

“Sweating the details is one of our core values and this project gave us plenty of details to sweat,” said Garavaglia. “A non-directional random orbital finish was chosen for the aluminum surfaces to produce uniform color and tone from all viewing angles. Solid aluminum dimensional panels were cut into rings and routed to varying depths with both recessed and raised graphic elements. The dark bronze used for the donor names is a nice contrast against the aluminum and added warmth. It also subtly tied in with the bronze colors used in the existing donor recognition systems throughout the museum. Having the rings span two walls across a 90-degree angle required a high level of precision in the design and fabrication to achieve a perfect fit.”

Installation occurred over a 3 day period. Precise patterns were created and used to drill hundreds of holes necessary for attachment points.

Garavaglia and his team made several visits to the site to plan the installation and identify any obstacles prior to the installation. One of these obstacles was an electrical outlet to the lower right of the installation which could not be removed. Ideation collaborated with the DIA facilities team to recess and cover the outlet to keep it from distracting the piece.

Hand placement of individual donor plaques on their respective rings.

By the end of the project, the Ideation team felt the pride they were hoping to evoke with the artistic donor wall. “As we were doing our final post installation review, the installation was visible to the public – everyone who came into the courtyard was instantly drawn to it and wanting to interact with it,” said Garavaglia.

A narrative label cast from 1/4″ thick aluminum with recessed and paint filled copy.

“The placement and location of the display is very attractive as most visitors pass by when visiting the museum. Its style contrasts with our other signage and like a target draws people to the wall and focuses their attention on the wall and our story.

The wall looks like a piece of art. From a distance a visitor only sees the general shape and color. They go to look closer at the “piece” and see that it’s signage, but then look and view it like artwork. Reading the “label” and looking intently at the names printed on the wall and making out the details. This interaction is unique and helps make the sign part of the museum’s collection.” Stepanie Rondy, Campaign Officer, Detroit Institute of Arts.

According to Ideation President, Daren Bossenberger, “artistic donor walls use design to not just recognize donors, but to draw people in to experience a story, a story in which the donors were the main characters. The design should help tell the story.”

Logicalis, a global technology firm contacted us to help tell their story in their office environment. Other goals included:

Energizing the space and making it feel like Logicalis.

Tastefully integrating digital displays that would help tell the story.

Bringing more privacy to glass walls of conference rooms and offices.

Stories of successful partnerships told with dimensional letters, custom-designed wall paper with pearl finish and digital displays.

For Logicalis, a technology company, telling their story naturally involved an extensive use of interactive touch screens and digital displays.

According to Ideation’s Michelle Lannoo, “Our goal was for the digital displays and the environment to work together. It was important for the walls to be part of the story without stealing attention from the content on the displays. Accordingly, we were very thoughtful about the words, textures and patterns surrounding the displays.”

Customer success stories around the globe told with custom-designed wall paper with pique finish, laser cut dimensional letters and interactive displays.

According to Ideation’s Creative Director, Jon Moses, “Once the story was mapped to the wall surfaces and we knew which part of the story needed to be told where we designed a single visual melody that could be used throughout the space to unify the experience. We achieved this with a custom-designed linear bar pattern that took into consideration existing floor patterns and architectural elements. We liked that it also had an analytical feel to it, like blocks of data.”

We then designed variations of this visual melody for specific parts of the story or application. For example, this pattern became an abstract global map on the wall that told the story of the company’s global reach and a multi-layered pattern to increase privacy on glass walls.”

Custom-designed privacy graphic for glass walls from two layers of etched silver and transparent red window films.

Attention was paid to both form and function when it came to increasing the level of privacy on the many glass walls throughout the space. According to Jon Moses, “We wanted the solution to feel like the rest of the space while offering the right balance between privacy and openness. The client loved the glass and wanted a little more privacy but not what they called a ‘shower curtain.'” To solve this, Ideation’s Michelle Lannoo brought a variation of the visual melody to glass with two layers of Oracal 8510 etched silver fine-grain film that was applied to both sides of the glass. A more literal touch of the Logicalis brand was applied with a single bar of transparent red film.

Client confidence in the design was achieved prior to production and installation with full-scale prototypes on 4’ clear acrylic panels that could be positioned in various locations throughout the space to test transparency and the effect of lighting.

According to Michelle, “While the effect may appear random, it is anything but. There is a single base layer of film installed at the width and elevation on all glass walls throughout the office. The second layer of the design extends above and below the base layer. The base layer brought a calm consistency to the design while also simplifying the installation by establishing a consistent baseline.”

Custom-designed privacy graphic applied to huddle rooms.

The Logicalis team came up with the words to name their huddle rooms. By bringing the names to the glass design, we increased the energy level, made the space feel like them, and told their story more clearly and visibly than with a traditional wall plaque next to the door.

During the discovery phase of the project, it was learned that some of the clear glass walls had also proven to be a safety concern. This was solved with a simple stripe of transparent red film.

The values of the company were told on two separate walls. While digital display told stories about the values in action, the three core values and other brand words were intended to feel more enduring.

Company values expressed in 376 characters in 4 heights and 3 depths from precision laser-cut acrylic, finished to brand colors.

According to Ideation designer, Michelle Lannoo, “In keeping with our visual melody or theme throughout the space, for this wall, I let the words be the linear block pattern we were used elsewhere. In this application the pattern became 3-dimensional. The 376 letters were produced in 4 different heights and 3 different thicknesses. To bring attention to the 3 core values, we layered the laser-cut letters and made the base layer their glossy red brand color while using a matte white finish on the first layer. By using the same matte finish on the letter surfaces as the wall, it feels like the letters are part of the wall, increasing that sense of permanency.”

According to Ideation’s Jon Moses, “the interior design had a rustic modern feel with reclaimed wood used throughout the space. We wanted the wayfinding and room identification signage to be an extension of the overall design rather than just a functional necessity. Our goal was for the custom signage to help brand the space.”

Room identification signs produced from reclaimed wood with direct-to-surface printed graphics and applied raised lettering and Grade 2 braille.

“Rather than fake the wood look with traditional sign laminates, our team wanted to use the same imperfect, reclaimed wood used for common area wall surfaces. After several prototypes, everyone was very pleased with the results!” Jon Moses, Ideation.

“Beyond the traditional value of making sure people know where to go when visiting and being an ADA compliant solution, our design added value to the environment by serving as an artistic element. Our goal was that the custom signage and environment would make residents proud to live there and visitors want to live there.” Jon Moses, Ideation Orange.

With a growth plan involving the opening of new restaurants across the Midwest, Bagger Dave’s Burger Tavern turned to Ideation Orange to refine the logo design for optimal impact in signage.

The original logo existed solely in a circular shape. Per Creative Director, Jon Moses, “working together with Krieger Klatt Architecture, we recognized that the logo as a primary façade sign was restricting what could be done with the architecture and also had readability issues when sized to meet city sign allowances. With future restaurants to be opened in both newly constructed standalone buildings and pre-existing buildings and storefronts, a much more expansive identity package was needed to appropriately brand the wide variety of spaces.”

There were also goals of bringing out more of the brand’s personality and introducing a symbol that could be used to support product branding including craft beers and sodas. This was accomplished in an updated logo design incorporating a train, a symbol that has been part of the company’s story and interior design from the very beginning.

Ideation designer, Michael Garavaglia worked collaboratively with Krieger Klatt Architects, developing and testing concepts of logos and signage in the context of their new standalone restaurant prototype as well as pre-existing buildings.

The final brand identity and comprehensive set of over 40 sign designs were packaged in a Brand & Sign Manual that is used to guide appropriate signage usage for new locations.

Michael Garavaglia and the team at Ideation Orange recently helped Cacao Tree Café get more storefront attention in busy Downtown Royal Oak.

Our friends at Cacao Tree Café called us to help tell their story on the exterior of their café. They serve up gourmet raw foods that cleanse, detox and rejuvenate. They make you beautiful from the inside out. Our objective became to make them beautiful from the “outside in.”

Cacao Tree Café occupies a wedge-shaped storefront in a walkable downtown setting. With just a sliver of its primary façade facing the street, it was easy to miss. A combination of projecting blade signs, façade lettering and window graphics was developed to maximize impact within the city’s sign ordinance and the client’s budget. In the process, ideation refined Cacao Tree Café’s logo, color palette and typography.

Large windows on the West elevation were used to capture the eyes of both vehicles and pedestrians heading East on busy Fourth Street. Fresh green and warm gold colors were used to stand out against the glass, a solution that delivers big impact at a low cost.

Simple, projecting blade signs were used at the corners of the building to catch the eyes of hungry pedestrians.

With the demand for electrical workers heating up, Ideation Orange was asked to help redesign Detroit’s Electrical Industry Training Center (EITC). One objective was to help recruit top high school graduates into their high tech apprenticeship program where apprentices earn wages while they learn. What a great alternative to college debt!

We jumped right in and helped them created a branded environment.

Lobby. Photos ©2015 Gene Meadows.

Branding the Space

This project was a very fun collaboration between Ideation and EITC’s Business Development team, Jennifer Mefford and Franz DeRaad.

Waiting Area. Photo ©2015 Gene Meadows.

According to Jennifer Mefford, “It was a pleasure to work with the Ideation team to amplify the great story of the Detroit Electrical Industry Training Center. Thanks to the design work and collaboration with Ideation, the Detroit EITC now more boldly reflects the high-quality, state-of-the-art training offered by the facility and the 100 year legacy between IBEW Local 58 and Southeastern Michigan Chapter NECA.”

Governor Snyder toured the EITC in March and shared his vision for the future of Michigan’s energy.

Program Vignettes. Photo ©2015 Gene Meadows.

Vignettes were created in the lobby for each of the 6 curriculum tracks in the Apprenticeship program. Custom typography was created from industry materials like mini solar panels and power control switches.

Photo ©2015 Gene Meadows.

New signage was mapped, designed and introduced throughout – from wayfinding and room identification signs to new systems for showcasing awards and accolades in a cleaner, more consistent way.

For over 100 years, this center has trained the area’s top electricians; those responsible for constructing Michigan’s most impressive buildings. Photography was selected from the archives to communicate this legacy.

New touchscreen displays were designed to better organize and display the photos of hundreds of graduating classes. As graduates return to the center for continuing education, finding their class photo has been a highlight of the experience. Varying photography styles and an ever-increasing number of photos was making this a design and organizational challenge.

The website was redesigned per the new design style and messaging that was created for the center.

“Ideation’s design work throughout the facility and in our printed and website extensions is fresh, clean and dynamic. It was a pleasure to work with the Ideation team who kept the project on track and still remained flexible throughout the effort as the project continued to add new elements.

The facility hosts thousands of guests each year including electrical professionals, legislators and other elected officials, K-12 educators and prospective apprentice applicants. The reaction to the newly refreshed space has been incredibly positive.”
